Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you always wanted to know about Rolling Ball Sculpture and were too afraid to ask.

What is Rolling Ball Sculpture?

A Rolling Ball Sculpture is a genre of kinetic art where balls travel through a carefully engineered path of ramps, loops, spirals and other mechanisms. Each sculpture is uniquely designed to showcase movement, rhythm, and precision craftsmanship.

How Long Does it Take to Build a Sculpture?

Creation time varies depending on the size and complexity, but most sculptures take between 4 to 12 weeks from design to completion. Custom projects may take longer.

Do These Sculptures Require Maintenance?

Minimal maintenance is needed. Basic cleaning of the track and marbles with rubbing alcohol or water will keep your sculpture running smoothly for many, many years.

Do You Ship Internationally?

Yes!  I can ship to nearly anywhere in the world.  I package the sculptures very well to avoid damage and I include the appropriate documents to avoid unnecessary taxes.

Are your sculptures handmade?

Yes — every OIM sculpture is 100% handcrafted by the artist, meaning - no two pieces are exactly alike. Each sculpture is a unique work of motion art.

Can I Commission a Sculpture?

Yes! I really enjoy creating custom sculptures and other types of kinetic art, tailored to your space, size preferences, and desired level of complexity. You can find more information about commissioning a sculpture on the Shop page.

What Materials Do You Use?

OIM sculptures are created almost exclusively from stainless steel. Occasionally, found or repurposed objects are also incorporated. Many hours of bending and shaping are involved to take these materials from their original state into their final form and, in many of the larger OIM sculptures, there are literally thousands of welds.
